R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, John Skelton of El Paso has distinguished himself |
|
through his achievements in high school and college football and |
|
has embarked on a promising career as a quarterback in the National |
|
Football League; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in El Paso on March 17, 1988, Mr. Skelton was a |
|
four-sport star at Burges High School; the recipient of all-city, |
|
all-district, and all-region honors in basketball, he was also a |
|
member of the track team and became an all-district player at four |
|
different positions in baseball; on the gridiron, he was similarly |
|
impressive, earning many city and district awards and passing for |
|
more than 2,000 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior; and |
|
WHEREAS, After high school, Mr. Skelton chose to attend |
|
Fordham University in the Bronx, New York; he took over the starting |
|
quarterback job midway through his freshman year and was named to |
|
the All-Patriot League second team as a sophomore in 2007, when he |
|
led Fordham to the league title; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his senior year, Mr. Skelton set school |
|
records for completions and passing yards and led the National |
|
Collegiate Athletic Association Football Championship Subdivision |
|
in total passing yards and ranked third in completions per game; in |
|
his collegiate career, he amassed 69 touchdowns and nearly 10,000 |
|
yards passing; his achievements were recognized with invitations to |
|
participate in the East-West Shrine Game in January 2010 and the NFL |
|
Scouting Combine the next month; and |
|
WHEREAS, A fifth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the |
|
2010 NFL Draft, Mr. Skelton was the first Fordham player selected |
|
since 1968; he made his professional debut on December 5, 2010, with |
|
a relief appearance against the St. Louis Rams; he was named the |
|
team's starting signal caller the following week, leading the Cards |
|
to a 43-13 victory; the best game of his young career came on |
|
Christmas night, when he passed for 183 yards and a touchdown and |
|
orchestrated a late game-winning drive as the Cardinals defeated |
|
the Dallas Cowboys 27-26; and |
|
WHEREAS, With his talent and drive, John Skelton has earned |
|
his place among a long line of Texas football greats who have gone |
|
on to attain national prominence, and his many supporters in the |
|
Lone Star State will be cheering him on as he competes in the NFL; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate John Skelton on his outstanding |
|
football accomplishments and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Skelton as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
